Rebates & Tax Incentives

Xcel Energy Insulation Rebates Denver Golden CO

There are two rebate programs through Xcel Energy through which we can apply for rebates. We file the rebate paperwork for you.

Xcel Energy Whole Home Efficiency Rebate Program

Whole Home Efficiency requires at least three rebate-qualifying improvements to be made in order to qualify for the most rebates. You can earn up to 75% of the project cost, with certain limits. This can amount to thousands of dollars! You can do one or two improvements to start, and “complete” the program by doing a third improvement. Three popular qualifying improvements are air sealing, attic insulation, and wall insulation. If you are working with a heat pump contractor who is an Xcel Energy Whole Home Efficiency partner, you can install a qualifying heat pump or heat pump water heater. Other options are available to choose from as well. On completion of 3 or more improvements, you can get another 25% bonus rebate. If you install a heat pump in the WHE program, improve air leakage by 20%, and insulate the attic, you can get another $600 bonus rebate! Calculating the rebates is complex. Call Xcel Energy’s rebate support line with Efficiency Revolution’s proposal for your efficiency improvement work in hand, and they can provide you with an estimated rebate amount.

Xcel Energy “Insulation and Air Sealing” Rebate Program

Other details apply to the numbers below. Call Xcel Energy’s rebate support line for details.

Xcel Energy Air Sealing Rebates

30% of the project cost, up to $1000 for Xcel gas heated homes.

-Air sealing must be done with qualifying attic and/or wall insulation. Air sealing alone does not qualify for a rebate.

Xcel Energy Attic Insulation Rebates: 30% of the cost, up to $1,250 for Xcel gas heated homes. Insulation level must be R 24 or less before upgrading, and must be upgraded to R 60.  Air leakage must be reduced as noted above.

Xcel Energy Above-Grade Wall and Attic Wall Insulation Rebates: 30% of the cost, up to $875 for Xcel gas heated homes. Air leakage must be reduced as noted above. Walls must not have any wall insulation before upgrading to earn rebate.

How likely is it that we can reduce the air leakage by 20% by sealing my attic? It’s not possible to estimate the amount of improvement, because there is no way to know how much leakage is coming from the attic vs other areas of the house. If 20%+ is currently coming from the attic and other areas that we seal, then we can achieve that level of air leakage reduction. If only 15% of the home’s air leakage is currently coming from those areas, then we can only achieve a 15% improvement. We do know that in a home with a vented crawl space or other large air leaks, if we seal the whole attic and other significant air leaks are not sealed, any contractor will have more difficulty achieving a 20% improvement. For the same reason, if your home has significant areas of ceilings which can’t be accessed from above, it’s less likely that a 20% improvement can be achieved.

How does the rebate application work?

If you qualify, we file for the rebate on your behalf. We do an air leakage test on the house at the beginning and end of the project. We don’t do the test at the end if you don’t qualify for the air sealing rebate. We usually do the tests on the same days as the improvement work. You can choose if the rebate comes in the form of a check or Xcel Energy bill credit, or if you are on automatic bill pay, it can be an automatic deposit.  Xcel Energy rebates are issued within 6-8 weeks of submittal. The rebate comes in the form of a check or bill credit, or if you are on auto bill pay, it can be an automatic deposit.  Let us know your preference.

Xcel Energy’s rebates only qualify for single family homes or multifamily units with up to four units per building. **Rebates are not available for multi-family buildings with more than four units. For example, a townhome or apartment building with 5 units or more in the building does not qualify for rebates.

Efficient Home Tax Credits (Inflation Reduction Act)

Home efficiency upgrades can go a long way toward shrinking your carbon footprint, which is why the tax code rewards climate-friendly efficiency improvements.

  • What the Energy Efficient Home Tax Credit covers: Consumers can get a 30 percent tax credit, (materials cost only, not labor) up to $1,200 per year, for adding insulation and sealing air leaks. The rebate for households with moderate incomes covers 50% of these costs. Find out if you qualify at the IRS’ web site. If you would like a thorough home efficiency evaluation and professional advice about which changes to make, and safety checks of your gas lines and gas-fired equipment, there is a tax credit of 30% of the cost, up to $150 per household for a home energy auditit.
  • When it ends: The tax credit as originally included in the Inflation Reduction Act applied to projects completed by the end of 2032. As of early July 2025, this is likely to be phased out at the end of 2025 due to new legislation.
  • Who qualifies: As long as the improvements are made to a primary residence, you should qualify. If you’re a renter or living in a multifamily building, you may qualify too. You will claim the tax credit when you file your federal income taxes. Ask your tax preparer for details on tax credits.
