Rebates & Tax Incentives

Xcel Energy Insulation Rebates Denver Golden CO

Xcel Energy Insulation Rebates are for homes heated primarily with Xcel Energy’s fuel. Improvements must be done by an Xcel Energy partner contractor like us to earn the rebates. Homes heated with electricity are eligible for lesser rebate amounts than homes heated with gas (see graphic below for details). The following rebates amounts are for homes heated with Xcel Energy’s gas service.

Air Sealing Rebates: 30% of the cost of sealing air leaks, up to $200. Rebates are contingent on reducing air leakage by 20%, as measured by us with a blower door test. If your house is considered below average leakiness at the first test, which is 0.50 Natural Air Changes per Hour (NACH), you do not qualify for air sealing rebates, but attic insulation rebates are not contingent on reducing air leakage.

Attic Insulation Rebates: If your attic insulation level is R 15 or less: 30% of the cost, up to: $400. Attic insulation rebates are also contingent on reducing air leakage by 20%, unless your house is considered below average leakiness at the first test, which is 0.50 Natural Air Changes per Hour (NACH).

Wall Insulation Rebates: Framed above grade walls currently uninsulated, rim joists excluded: 30% of the cost, up to $350. Air leakage reduction of 20% is also required for wall insulation rebates.

How likely is it that we can reduce the air leakage by 20% by sealing my attic? It’s not possible to estimate the amount of improvement, because there is no way to know how much leakage is coming from the attic vs other areas of the house. If 20%+ is currently coming from the attic and other areas that we seal, then we can achieve that level of air leakage reduction. If only 15% of the home’s air leakage is currently coming from those areas, then we can only achieve a 15% improvement. We do know that in a home with a vented crawl space or other large air leaks, if we seal the whole attic and other significant air leaks are not sealed, any contractor will have a lot more difficulty achieving a 20% improvement. For the same reason, if your home has significant areas of ceilings which can’t be accessed from above, it’s less likely that a 20% improvement can be achieved. Below is an excerpt straight from Xcel’s own rebate application form for more detail.

How does filing the rebate application work? We do an air leakage test on the house at the beginning and end of the project. We don’t do the test at the end if you don’t qualify for the air sealing rebate. We usually do the tests while we’re there doing the improvement work. If you qualify, we file for the rebate on your behalf. You get to choose if the rebate comes in the form of a check or Xcel Energy bill credit, or if you are on automatic bill pay, it can be an automatic deposit.  Xcel Energy rebates are issued within 6-8 weeks of submittal. The rebate comes in the form of a check or bill credit, or if you are on auto bill pay, it can be an automatic deposit.  Let us know your preference.

Xcel Energy’s rebates only qualify for single family homes or multifamily units with up to four units per building. **Rebates are not available for multi-family buildings with more than four units. For example, a townhome or apartment building with 5 units or more in the building does not qualify for rebates.

Efficient Home Tax Credits (Inflation Reduction Act)

Home efficiency upgrades can go a long way toward shrinking your carbon footprint, which is why the 2023 tax code rewards climate-friendly efficiency improvements.

  • What the Energy Efficient Home Tax Credit covers: Consumers can get a 30 percent tax credit, (materials cost only, not labor) up to $1,200 per year, for adding insulation and sealing air leaks. The rebate for households with moderate incomes covers 50% of these costs. Find out if you qualify here. If you would like professional advice about which changes to make, and safety/efficiency checks of your gas lines and gas-fired equipment, there is also a tax credit of 30% of the cost, up to $150 per household for a home energy audit.
  • When it starts and ends: The tax credit applies to projects completed between January 1, 2023 and the end of 2032.
  • Who qualifies: As long as the improvements are made to a primary residence, you should qualify. If you’re a renter or living in a multifamily building, you may qualify too. You will claim the tax credit when you file your federal income taxes. Ask your tax preparer for details on tax credits.
